Summer Lunch Party July 5th

Some of our members had already enjoyed a look at our new venue, Boxgrove Village Hall, in April when we invited members for an introductory visit. The Celebration Summer Party in July was the first ‘real’ event for our re-vamped Society – a new venue and a change to afternoon meetings. The twenty six members who gathered for a social afternoon of good food and good company were greeted with glasses of Prosecco by ‘barman’ Brian before sitting down…

Christmas Party

A sumptuous three course meal prepared and cooked by organiser Louise was enjoyed by all. A winter salad with garlic bread was followed by chicken chasseur with seasonal vegetables and finished off with bread pudding and custard and cream. Between courses we were entertained by our Patron, Simon Brett, with a selection of humorous seasonal readings including a description of the Cratchits’s Christmas dinner from Dickens’s ‘A Chritsmas Carol’. An added attraction this year was the Christmas Tree Festival in…

Tenth Anniversary Celebration

Our summer party this year celebrated the Society’s tenth anniversary with a sumptuous three course meal, prepared as usual by events organiser Louise Gibbon. Entertainment was provided by Patron Simon Brett with offerings between courses of humorous poems, parodies and epitaphs which greatly enhanced the festive mood with lots of laughter. Highlight of the evening was the cutting of the celebration cake iced in the form of a book which was carried out by Simon and Louise. Thanks were given…

CHRISTMAS PARTY

In addition to the usual excellent three course meal prepared by our organiser Louise, we were very fortunate this year to be entertained by our patron, Simon Brett. Simon is well-known for his parodies and puns and he kept us laughing throughout the evening. His offerings included a trawl through the wastepaper baskets of some famous writers where he ‘found’ first drafts of poems and novels including some by T S Eliot, Raymond Chandler, Wordsworth and Jane Austen. He gave…

Summer Party 2014

Our annual summer party went with a swing as usual despite the occasional setback. Organiser and caterer Louise had to be away for a few days immediately beforehand to attend a funeral in Newcastle but she still managed to come up trumps with a tasty three course meal, aided by her helpers in the kitchen. Prawns served in scallop shells or cold pea soup –  excellent choices for a hot summer evening – were followed by salmon with new potatoes and…

Christmas Party

This year’s party began with a double drama. Due to be entertained with seasonal offerings by our Patron, Simon Brett and member John Clegg, we learned at the eleventh hour that John was spending the evening in A and E after a fall. Secondly the accompanist for Marjorie James’s song had not arrived. Undaunted, Marjorie sang unaccompanied and Simon rose to the occasion miraculously producing enough readings, both happy and sad, to cover for John’s absence. The superb meal, planned…

Summer Party 2013

Our summer party this year had an Italian theme with a three course meal prepared and served by Louise and her helpers.  The meal was enlivened between courses with short talks by our member Richard Davies on the Italian diplomat and writer Daniele Vare. Vare spent many years in China in the early part of the twentieth century – a turbulent time in the country’s history. His novel, ‘The Maker of Heavenly Trousers’  is a fictionalised account of his relationship with the young waif Kuniang…

Christmas Party 2012

Our Christmas parties always include three essential ingredients – good food, good company and excellent entertainment. This year did not disappoint. An excellent three course dinner was cooked and served by events organiser Louise Gibbon with her helpers in the kitchen Diane, Angela and Robert. Game terrine was followed by steak and ale pie and topped off with a delicious trifle. Between courses we were entertained by member John Clegg accompanied by Robert Hewitt on piano performing some of the…

Summer Party August 2012

In homage to the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens’ birth, the summer party was billed as ‘A Dickens of an Evening’ – and it was. Members enjoyed a convivial evening of words, wine and warbling, complemented by delicious food prepared as always by Louise and her band of helpers. Charles Kay, our London walks guide and Dickens expert, began by speculating what Dickens would have made of all this and concluded, after a short talk about the great man’s love…

Our Parties

August is the month of our summer party when we have the opportunity for more conversation, getting to know each other better and dining. This year we will host an Italian themed evening with a three course meal. Between courses, member Richard Davies will talk about the Anglo-Italian diplomat/writer Daniele Vare whose book ‘The Maker of Heavenly Trousers’ has recently been re-issued by Penguin. In December we don our finery and decorate the hall for our Christmas party. Last year…
